The Big Green first hit the gridiron in 1880 and in 1901 fielded an integrated team -- one of the first in college football. The legendary Earl “Red” Blaik coached at Hanover before moving on to the West Point. Dartmouth was one of the first institutions to recognize the disrespectful nature of Native American mascots changing its “Indians” nickname to The Big Green in 1968.
